YARD: 3 THINGS TO DO AT THE END OF THE SUMMER

YARD: 3 THINGS TO DO AT THE END OF THE SUMMER
To keep your landscaping looking its best, some chores are best done in early fall.

Trim the Cedar Hedges
If you haven’t already trimmed them in June (the ideal period to trim hedges), do it right away, because it’ll be too late in September! For successful trimming (and to avoid jeopardizing the health of your hedges), make sure to only trim the most recent shoots (foliage and tender stems). Ideally, we recommend trimming them up to a third or two thirds of the original length. Be careful, however, because when cutting mature branches you could damage your trees. Generally speaking, a hedge shears is the best way to go about trimming. If the hedge is long, an electric hedge trimmer may be the best option!

Lawn Maintenance
Late August, early September: it’s time to reseed your lawn in sparse or damaged areas to avoid weeds sprouting up! Take advantage of this moment to aerate your yard as well, which will stimulate lawn growth. We also recommend checking the pH level of the soil. If it’s too acidic, set things straight by adding some lime. This time of the year is also great for fertilizing your lawn if you’re accustomed to it.

Planting

You may not be aware of it, but the end of summer and the beginning of fall is the perfect time to plant perennials, trees, conifers, and shrubs. In addition to getting a head start on next spring, you’ll be able to take advantage of interesting discounts!
