Interior paint: more than just walls

Think outside the box and dare dazzling springtime colours inside your home. Eclecticism and natural colours, from sage green to terracotta, are still trendy. If you need a change but do not feel like repainting all your walls, here are different types of surfaces that can be quite easily painted. Don't hesitate to ask for some advice in store to get you started on your project!

Wood

If you like the natural grain and knots of wood, you can sand it and apply a stain of your choice to protect it. If not, you can paint it either partially, with patterns, or entirely to obtain an even tone. Pieces of furniture are appropriate for such transformation, but you can also make it on staircases, floors, ladders, baseboards, doors, screen walls, beams, shelves and panels. If the wood is waxed, you first have to strip it, which can be a tedious task!

Product suggestions:

  • TSPeco cleaner and degreaser to clean and remove oil stains
  • Coarse sandpaper (for grinding)
  • To paint wood: acrylic latex primer and any type of paint
  • To stain wood: stain and varnish

Metal

An easy way to change the design of a room is to paint some metal accessories, such as door or cabinet handles, desk or chair legs, handrails, bar stools or beams. Black is very trendy on metal and can refresh old furniture with a more modern look.

Product suggestions:

  • Anti-rust primer for metal
  • Liquid or aerosol paint for metal

Melamine

Melamine furniture products, such as kitchen cabinets, are sold in a wide range of colours and are not meant to be repainted. It is still possible to refresh your kitchen, but several steps are required to remove the lacquered finish, namely several coats of paint. Pay particular attention to paint drips on visible surfaces.

Product suggestions:

  • High adherence primer
  • 100% acrylic melamine paint
  • 6 mm paint roll

Masonry (bricks or concrete blocks)

A painted brick wall or mantel gives a distinguished and original look to any room. White, grey and black are the most common colours for this type of project. You must first clean and brush the surface to remove residues. If the blocks or bricks are recently installed, we recommend waiting 90 days before painting it. Inside the fireplace, you must apply one or two coats of heat-resistant paint.

Product suggestions:

  • TSPeco cleaner and degreaser to clean and remove oil stains
  • Primer if you have to cover a dark colour with a pale colour
  • 100% acrylic latex paint, preferably matte, eggshell, or soft gloss
  • Long nap roll (15 or 20 mm) for textured bricks. Regular roll (10 or 13 mm) for smooth bricks

Concrete

A basement or garage concrete floor can be painted if it is completely dry and does not absorb moisture from the ground. A useful trick to verify is to stick a 2 X 2 feet plastic piece on the concrete floor with adhesive tape. Wait for a few days and check if the plastic is moist. If it is, the concrete should not be painted yet.

Product suggestions:

  • TSPeco cleaner and degreaser to clean and remove oil stains or hydrochloric acid (10%) to clean
  • Concrete primer
  • Concrete floor paint

PVC

Before you start painting a PVC surface, you have to make the right preparation and get proper equipment. It is in fact a smooth surface that is hard to paint, and you have to start by sanding it. You can always ask for advice in store.

Product suggestions:

  • TSPeco cleaner and degreaser to clean and remove oil stains
  • 100% acrylic liquid or aerosol paint
