HISTORY

1981-1984 - The beginnings of Canac-Marquis Grenier

In December 1981, the merger of the family-owned companies of Jos Grenier, founded in 1875, and Louis Canac-Marquis, founded in 1878, created Canac-Marquis Grenier. By this time, the business had already establishing itself at the forefront of hardware distribution in the Québec City region with a total of five stores. Beginning in 1984, with its ongoing commitment to improving its place in the market, Canac acquired the stores of Baptiste Touchatou in Charlesbourg, Vanier, and Saint-Romuald.

1985-1989-1993 - Acquisitions by the Laberge Group

In November 1985, the Laberge Group, owner of the hardware store “Quincaillerie Laberge,” acquired the total assets of Canac-Marquis Grenier. In 1989, the Laberge Group purchased the hardware store “Le Centre de bricolage Chez Tôle,” and in 1993, the two home improvement stores of “Matériaux Audet” joined the chain.

1995 - Distribution Centre Acquisition

In order to support and lead such an expansion, Canac built its own distribution centre in 1995 in L’Ancienne-Lorette. With the integration of new computerized resources, daily store supply became possible. Incidentally, the growth of the business and increased commercial offers would lead to another expansion of the distribution centre in January 2005, totalling a surface of 145,000 square feet.

1998-Today - Canac expands in Québec

Since the acquisition by the Laberge Group, the company’s expansion has been based on opening new, modern hardware stores and renovating existing ones to adapt to the needs and expectations of today’s customers.

Several new stores have opened their doors since the Laberge Group’s acquisition of the company. Lévis (1998), Sainte-Foy (2000), Beauport (2001), L’Ancienne Lorette (2001), and Charlesbourg (2004) on Rue Bernier have all consolidated the Laberge Group’s presence in the Québec City region. In 2005, the store in Saint-Romuald was relocated in order to expand its premises. In 2006, the store in Vanier underwent important renovations, and in spring 2008, a new store in Val-Bélair opened. 2010 started off strong with the opening of a brand new store in Saint-Nicolas, unique amongst our stores in the region for its LEED-certified building standard. During this same year, the Charlesbourg store (LOUIS XIV) underwent major renovations, much to the pleasure of its clientele. The store in L’Ancienne-Lorette has also expanded and was completely renovated in 2013, while the Beauport store underwent similar renovations in spring 2015.

With the opening of the branch in Victoriaville, built in 2002 and moved in 2010 to offer more surface area, along with new branches in Saint-Georges (2005), Chicoutimi (2006), Trois-Rivières (2007), Sherbrooke (2007), Cap-de-la-Madeleine (2009), Jonquière (2011), and Drummondville (2012), the chain now includes several stores outside the Québec City region. Also in 2010, the Laberge Group acquired two stores from the Gaston Côté Group, one in Cowansville and one in Rock Forest. The Cowansville branch has operated since 2010 and, since April 2014, occupies completely rebuilt premises, while the Rock Forest branch opened in 2013. The new store in Rimouski opened in November 2014, becoming the first Canac branch in the Bas-St-Laurent region. Beginning in summer 2015, the Henri-Bourassa store was completely demolished to make way for a new store reflecting the company’s current image. Open since spring 2016, the new Charlesbourg branch offers a brand new renovation centre with a large choice of low-price products.

2007 - Distribution Centre Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures

No longer able to meet the demand, a brand new distribution centre opened its doors in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures in 2007. This distribution centre, equipped with new state-of-the-art technology and equipment, is one of the most efficient in the country . With its 25,000 square feet of surface, this building ensures the company’s enormous growth opportunity with an incomparable ease of supply and procurement. It permits Canac to buy goods directly from the manufacturer, regardless of place, and distribute them directly to stores for less cost to the customer. Unbeatable prices, that’s a cornerstone of Canac’s mission.

2010 - Name Change

Over the years, customers have come to know Canac-Marquis Grenier. Some may have even appropriated their Canac and use the name familiarly when referring to their own hardware collection. Thus in 2010, company directors decided to update the business's identity by renaming the chain CANAC. This new identity allows the company to be better equipped for future growth and to facilitate brand positioning among the public, generating a positive impact on all aspects of the company’s marketing strategy.

2014 - New Distribution Centre Drummondville

In December 2014, management announced the purchase of a site in Drummondville for the construction of a new distribution centre. The construction of this massive building measuring 350,000 square feet began in summer 2015. The strategic placement of this new distribution centre will ensure quick and efficient transport logistics to all stores west of Québec City. With this new construction project, Canac is committed to supporting their established expansion strategy in the west of the province.

2016 - Expansion to the West

Canac has chosen to construct its first store in the Montréal region in the city of Beauharnois. This 24th Canac store is located in the Beauharnois Plaza at the corner of Highway 30. Construction began October 7, 2015 and the store officially opened in May 2016.
